Introduction

Yangguan Pass is located 70 km southwest of Dunhuang and was a strategic gateway on the ancient Silk Road. Built during the Han Dynasty (around 120 BC), it was the westernmost outpost of the Chinese empire. The famous Tang Dynasty poem 'Farewell at Yangguan' by Wang Wei immortalized the pass. Today, visitors can see the ruins of the Han Dynasty beacon tower, the Yangguan Museum, and the vast Gobi landscape beyond.
