Introduction

Yumen Pass (Jade Gate) is located 90 km northwest of Dunhuang and was another crucial Silk Road gateway, built during the Han Dynasty. It was through this pass that jade from Khotan (modern-day Hotan) entered China, giving the pass its name. The ruins include the remains of a Han Dynasty fort, beacon towers, and sections of the Great Wall. The vast, desolate Gobi landscape evokes the isolation and adventure of ancient Silk Road travelers.
