Longmen Grottoes are located on the banks of the Yi River, 12.5 km south of Luoyang. They are one of China's Four Great Grottoes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site contains over 2,300 caves and niches with more than 100,000 Buddhist statues carved between the 5th and 8th centuries. The most famous is the Vairocana Buddha in Fengxian Temple, a 17.14 m tall masterpiece of Tang Dynasty sculpture. The grottoes represent the peak of Chinese Buddhist stone carving art.
