Yonghe Temple (Lama Temple) is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing. Originally built in 1694 as the residence of Prince Yong (later Emperor Yongzheng), it was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in 1744. It is the largest and best-preserved Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. The temple's highlight is a 26 m tall statue of the Maitreya Buddha in the Wanfu Pavilion, carved from a single white sandalwood tree — a breathtaking sight. The annual 'Devil Dance' ceremony in late winter is a major attraction.
