The Potala Palace is situated on Marpo Ri (Red Hill) in the northwest of Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region. It is a monumental palace-fortress complex originally built by King Songtsen Gampo of the Tubo Kingdom in the 7th century. Reconstructed in the 17th century, it became the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas and the political and religious center of Tibet. The palace features distinctive Tibetan architecture, rising 13 stories with over 1,000 rooms. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most iconic symbol of Tibet.
