Introduction

Sera Monastery is one of the three great Gelugpa university monasteries of Tibet, located on the northern outskirts of Lhasa. Founded in 1419, it is famous for its daily debating sessions, where monks engage in vigorous philosophical debates in the courtyard, using dramatic hand gestures — a unique and fascinating spectacle. The monastery complex includes several colleges, assembly halls, and chapels housing exquisite murals and statues.
