Mogao Caves
Introduction
Mogao Caves, commonly known as the 'Caves of a Thousand Buddhas,' are located 25 km southeast of Dunhuang. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's greatest repositories of Buddhist art, containing 735 caves with 45,000 sq m of murals and over 2,000 painted sculptures spanning a thousand years (4th to 14th centuries). The caves document the evolution of Buddhist art and the cultural exchange along the Silk Road. The Library Cave (Cave 17), discovered in 1900, contained over 50,000 manuscripts and artifacts.
