Tiananmen
Introduction
Tiananmen is located in the center of Beijing and was the main gate of the imperial city during the Ming and Qing dynasties. First built in the 15th year of the Yongle reign (1417), the gate tower features nine bays in width and five in depth, with a double-eave hip roof covered in yellow glazed tiles — a masterpiece of ancient Chinese gate architecture. In front of Tiananmen lies Tiananmen Square, the world's largest city-center square, capable of holding one million people. Tiananmen is the national symbol of China, and the daily flag-raising ceremony at dawn is a solemn and moving spectacle.
